GCC signs railway pact as regional network nears 56% completion
  • Gulf Arab states signed an agreement to create a common operating framework for their regional railway network, which is currently 55.9% complete and set to begin operations by December 2030.
  • The agreement aims to enhance integration of national railway systems and improve transport links across the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
  • The planned railway network will span 1,768 km, connecting Kuwait to Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and Oman, facilitating the movement of goods and passengers.
  • Passenger trains are designed to operate at speeds up to 200 km/h, while freight trains will travel between 80 and 120 km/h.
